How it works
Drop the statement
Card statements often have a summary box, several sections and totals under each. Only the transaction rows are kept.
Check the balance
Previous balance, charges and payments are added up and compared with the new balance printed on the statement.
Export
Download Excel or CSV. With Pro, a QBO or OFX file for QuickBooks, and a merge of twelve statements into one sheet.

How card statements are read
Signs
Issuers print amounts in different ways. Some show charges as positive and payments as negative. Some show everything unsigned and rely on section headings such as "Payments and credits" and "Purchases". Some add CR to credits. Plainsum reads the sign when there is one, falls back to the section heading when there is not, and then tests the whole statement against the balances. If the signs do not reconcile in one direction but do in the other, it flips them and marks the affected rows.
Sections and subtotals
Lines like "Total purchases for this period" or "Total fees charged" are totals, not transactions. They are skipped so they do not double your spending. Interest and fee lines are real charges and are kept.
Two dates
If a table has both a transaction date and a posting date, the transaction date is used for the row.
Foreign-currency details printed on a second line under a purchase become part of that row's description. Check them if you travel a lot.
Questions
How do I convert a credit card statement PDF to Excel?
Drop the statement on the box at the top of this page. Plainsum reads the payments, purchases, fees and interest sections, checks that previous balance plus charges minus payments equals the new balance, and lets you download an Excel file.
Are charges positive or negative in the output?
Money you spent is negative and money paid in or credited back is positive, the same as a bank account, whatever the statement prints. The Credit card type is detected automatically, and you can change it under "Fix columns, dates or signs" if a statement is misread.
How is the accuracy check different for a card?
A card statement shows what you owe, so the check is previous balance plus charges minus payments and credits equals new balance. If those do not agree to the cent, the difference is shown above the table.
What about the transaction date and the posting date?
Many card statements show both. Plainsum keeps the transaction date as the Date and ignores the posting date. If your statement lists only one date, that one is used.
My statement shows credits as "CR" or with a minus sign. Is that handled?
Yes. An amount ending in CR, or shown with a minus sign, is treated as money coming back to the account. Amounts under a "Payments and credits" heading are read as credits even when printed without a sign.
Does it work for store cards and charge cards?
It works on any statement whose transaction table has a date, a description and an amount. Layouts differ between issuers, so check the accuracy check and the marked rows on your first statement.
